Same sex marriage advocates in Maine seemed to have the elements in place for victory Tuesday.
On Wednesday, supporters who want to put the issue back on the ballot in California learned a big lesson from their defeat: Advocates have not convinced voters that same-sex marriage will not be taught in public schools if it is legal.
While Maine's attorney general said during the campaign that such claims were unfounded, that did not convince voters, who approved the repeal of the state's law legalizing such marriages by 53 percent to 47 percent.
"We need to meet that issue head-on," said Pamela Brown, policy director for the Oakland-based national organization Marriage Equality USA.
