Dallas-Fort Worth area church-school partnerships give children a classroom lift

Apartments surround Irving's Townsell Elementary School on all sides. Save for a few students, all children attending the school live in them.

Enrollment at the school often soars close to 900 students, mostly from low-income, black and Hispanic families.

Three years ago, members of the mostly white and mostly middle-class Irving Bible Church wanted a project.

The church formed a reading buddies program to mentor children at Townsell. It also formed a lunch buddies program at neighboring Houston Middle School.
