October 28, 2005 marked the 40th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, the Second Vatican Council's declaration on the Roman Catholic Church's relations with non-Christian religions. Nostra Aetate outlined commonalities between the Church and other world religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Judaism, and called for increased inter-religious discussion. The declaration condemned discrimination and persecution, and specifically denounced anti-Semitism. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on November 7, 2005, recognizing the role of Nostra Aetate in fostering inter-religious dialogue and encouraging the U.S. to lead efforts to oppose anti-Semitism and religious intolerance worldwide.
